The winners of the Fifth edition of the BigScreen Festival 2007
Kunming, China – December 4, 2007 – Saturday night the winning films from BigScreen Film Festival 2007 (Kunming, China) were announced by a jury composed of Marco Ceresa of the Venice University "Ca' Foscari" and collaborator of the Venice Film Festival, screenwriter Wang Yao and Jeremy Goldkorn, founder of the highly influential Danwei.org.
Winners included Hong Kong director Yan Yan Mak's "The Scarlet Robe" for best long film, "Il Vecchio e la Fontana" by Tony Palazzo of Italy for best short film, "Living in a Perfect World" by Italians Diego D'Innocenzo and Marco Leopardi for best documentary and "Almost Like One of the Family" by Astrid Goransson from Sweden for best animation.
Four films by French director Jean-Gabriel Périot - "Even if she had been a criminal", "Dies Irae", "Under Twilight" and "Nijuman No Borei" were collectively honored as the best entries in the videoart and experimental films category. The jurors said they based their selections upon the theme of modernity vs tradition, which was a common thread in all the winning movies.
Furthemore the following works were praised by jurors and public: Mika J. Ripatti (Record of Labour), Paolo Bonfiglio (Mater), Robert Margolis & Frank Matter (The Definition of Insanity), Facundo Cantelmi (Retorno a Escena), JiHyun Ahn (Their circumstances), Riccardo De Cal (Memoriae Causa), Darine El Khatib (Barriers of Time), Lionel Chok (Crossroad), Don Askarian (Ararat - 14 views), Salvo Cuccia (Oltre Selinunte), Philippe Chatelain & Virginie Lavey (Apnea), Barry Canty (LA Proper) and Alexander "Satim" Timofeev.
Special Guest were the hongkongese director Yan Yan Mak, who presented her movie "The Scarlet Robe" starring the singer Denise Ho and the japanese singer Tujiko Noriko, who performed Saturday night for World AIDS Day (01/12) for the first time in China, along with Rap Republic (11/29) and YuanSheng Studio (28/11).

2007 BigScreen International Film Festival to be Held in Kunming
Kunming, China – November 26, 2007 – From November 27 to December 1 the Chinese city of Kunming will host the 2007 BigScreen International Film Festival, featuring 94 films from more 30 countries. This year’s BigScreen festival will add momentum to Kunming’s emergence as one of China’s major movie centers.
This fifth installment of the BigScreen film festival series will last five days and will highlight films from around the globe, including feature-length films, short films, documentaries and video installations. Special guests include jurors Marco Ceresa (collaborator of the Venice Film Festival , Professor at the Venice University "Ca' Foscari"), Wang Yao (screenwriter, Baober in Love, Returning Home, Gourmet of Poison) and Chinese media expert Jeremy Goldkorn, founder of the highly influential website Danwei.org. Hong Kong director Yan Yan Mak (Butterfly, Big Brother) will also be a special guest of the festival and will introduce her new film, The Scarlet Robe. Special musical guests include songstress Tujiko Noriko, bilingual hiphop act Rap Republic and the Bai, Yi and Wa minority performers of Yuansheng Studio, one of the event’s co-sponsors.
BigScreen Festival is organized by CinaOggi.it and English-language portal GoKunming.com and is hosted by the Yunnan Experimental Film Base. The festival has the full support of the Kunming People’s Radio Station, Dushi Shibao newspaper and other relevant government organizations.
This year’s BigScreen Festival is the fifth festival in the BigScreen series, which was launched in Padua, Italy in March 2004. Over the last three and a half years, the BigScreen series has attracted filmmakers and film aficionados from around the world, especially from Asia and Europe. After three editions in Europe, BigScreen moved to China. Last year’s BigScreen Italia – also held in Kunming – served as an important component of the Year of Italy in China and featured prominent members of China’s ‘sixth generation’ of filmmakers such as Jia Zhangke and Wang Xiaoshuai, who served as jurors for the event. This year BigScreen returns to Kunming to serve as a cultural bridge between China and the world.
“Film is an ideal vehicle for communication and exchange between different cultures,” BigScreen founder Matteo Damiani said. “I believe that this year’s BigScreen Film Festival in Kunming will provide China with a very special cultural platform.
