Yunnan is a province located in the far southwestern corner of China. Yunnan literally means ‘south of the clouds’. Kunming, the capital of Yunnan, is in the heart of the province with an elevation of about 2,000 meters. Kunming is home to more than 5 million people. Owing to its unique geographical position and year-round mild climate Kunming is known in China as “the city of eternal spring”. Countries bordering Yunnan include Vietnam, Laos and Myanmar. Yunnan is known as one of the world’s most ethnically diverse regions. It has the highest number of ethnic groups among all provinces and autonomous regions in China, making Yunnan an important cultural melting pot. The ethnic diversity, geographical physiognomy (rain forests in the south and elevated mountains in the north) along with easy access of Kunming by all Asian airports make Yunnan one of China’s principal tourist destinations. This is especially true for domestic tourism. China’s central government is grooming Kunming for its important role as China’s gateway to Southeast Asia. National investments in Yunnan are in line with those reserved for Beijing, Shangai, Tianjin, Shenzhen, etc. The modernization level is high and tangible and recent export growth is remarkable. Exports are focused on electronic instruments, industrial machinery, chemical and farming products and non-ferrous metals. Advantages include high quality of life and low costs compared to other industrialized Chinese provinces - this is attracting a growing number of both Chinese and Western investors lured by high potential return on investment.
The economic transformation of Yunnan is accompanied by a new emphasis on the region’s cultural richness. One example is the theatrical production “Dynamic Yunnan” choreographed and performed by the renowned Chinese dancer and Yunnan native Yang Liping. The show will be presented in Europe and the United States.
